1/8/2024 0 Comments Istatistica proI opened up my 5.1 mix and I was able to get all of my plugins running except Nugen ISL and Vislm. So it was easy to just plug those same 2 cables into the studio. My studio was already setup to just plug in 2 thunderbolt cables to the mbp for everything (thunderbolt hubs and pci box with HDX and AJA card). I haven't had time during the week to setup the new computer, but I worked on it over the weekend. This session would bring my macbook to a crawl and all of the fans would be spinning up. My previous computer is a macbook pro 2019 running ultimate and HDX. I am in the middle of a pretty large track count narrative feature mix in 5.1 with a ton of plugins. I work in post production for film/ tv/ web. I just recently received my mac studio with M1 ultra and 128gb ram. My current system can handle all my audio needs, But it is the video performance aspect that would lead me to consider a Studio in the not too distant future. Yes it is empty and that's a good thought, it would fit and the back end of that space is open so there would be air flow, but I only use the external SSD's to transfer completed Video projects to (currently I am doing Music Video's almost exclusively) And the external enclosure is not running while I am recording. Have you ever thought about moving it beneath that shelf into the (what I assume is an empty area) behind that board on the right side of the desk (near the base of the arrow graphic you added to the picture), or is it too tall to fit in there? It might reduce the fan noise you hear when sitting at the desk. And again, the noise level is very low, and it never changes, even when it's under the heaviest test loads I've been able to throw at it. I think this might prove my theory that my reduced CPU power with this machine is from pro tools running via rosetta? Although I thought it was odd that Logic didn't seem as powerful as reaper. It's pretty incredible! I have a feeling I'm going to be watching a lot of reaper youtube videos and tinkering with it on the couch at night. I was even able to add some non AS native plugins like Ozone, and it barely flinched. I did get some crackling in decay of the 20 or so valhalla vintage verbs, but nothing show stopping, and this is an unrealistic amount of processing. Logic weirdly seemed about the same as pro tools, but in reaper the CPU power is insane! With all the fancy EQ's, oversampling saturations, oversampling dynamics, reverbs, channel strips, several gullfoss master, and 2 pro L 2's stacked 32x oversampling on the master, CPU usage is only around 20%. To test the CPU with a fully native DAW I dropped some stems into logic and reaper. I have had issues in the past with izotope and sonnox plugins not liking each other. Maybe there's a plugin compatibility issue somewhere in the session. Removing Gullfoss from this session reduced the CPU usage enough for it to playback, but after more testing I don't think it's really the cause of any specific problem. Here's a screenshot showing CPU usage of this session after unfreezing everything and disabling 1 gullfoss master, there's still one active. Waiting to hear from soundtheory to see if they might know of a solution. Luckily disabling a single gullfoss master allows my mix session to play back just fine. Ozone 9 and Pro L2 with oversampling on seem way more CPU hungry than previously as well. Looks like 1 tops on the ultra right now. On my intel imac and Windows machine I'm able to have multiple instances of Gullfoss Master in a session. The master versions just sounds slightly nicer to me on large groups of instruments. It seems to mostly be Gullfoss Master, which is sometimes a nice quick eq fix/cheat. I have made some progress with narrowing down which plugins seem to be using way more CPU than they do on Intel. Interestingly your system is likely the configuration I would purchase That is until the processor load goes up, in which case they get noticeably loud Hey thanks for the info Yes my Intel iMac is at ear level and about 3-4 ft away on the upper shelf of my studio desk and the fans are also noticeable at idle but not overly loud. Compared to the M1 Mac mini, it's louder (the mini is basically silent unless you put your ear within inches of it) but the M1 Max Mac Studio VERY quiet, and the fan speed and noise level do not change, no matter the load. I tried measuring the radiated noise level with an SPL meter, but it's below the 30 dBA SPL noise floor of my control room.Īccording to iStatistica Pro, the fans are running at 1,325-1,333 RPM and they stay in that range, regardless of the load I hit the computer with. That's with it sitting about a foot and a half below ear level and about two to three feet away from me on the top surface of my desktop. The fans in my Mac Studio are audible - barely.
